Dawn at the Wholesale Market: Walking the Morning Auction

At 6:00 a.m., a bell rings to mark the start of the morning auction at Hakodate’s
local seafood wholesale market, known as Hakoichi. Buyers gather around as auctioneers
call out prices with practiced rhythm and power. Fishing boats return to port one by
one, their morning catch—gathered from the coastal waters—laid out for bidding as the
market comes alive.
As the sun rises, seagulls soar over the harbor and the distinctive sight of
squid-fishing boats strung with glowing lanterns fills the docks—a view unique to
Hakodate. Seafood selected at auction that morning is delivered to the hotel, where it
becomes part of a one-of-a-kind breakfast, prepared just for you.
